Impact of Automatic Requirements Analyses on the Quality and Efficiency of Manual Requirement Revies

Context: As poor requirements specifications can be very cost intensive within the development life cycle of a product, reviews are used to detect defects in requirements specifications. Reviews can be done either manually or with automated requirements smell analyses. Aim: The objective of this thesis is to find out, whether the use of automated requirements smell analyses influence the quality and efficiency of manual requirements reviews. Approach: We conducted an experiment with 43 student participants. In this experiment, the participants need to review excerpts of requirements specification from industry. In order to measure quality and efficiency, we defined quality as the number of findings detected by the reviewers and efficiency as the time, which the reviewers required to review. In our experiment design two groups review the same document, but one group gets a document that was previously edited by automated requirements smell analyses. This way, we can compare the influence of automated requirements smell analyses on the manual review. Results and Conclusion: The results of our experiment show that automated requirements smell analyses do have an impact on the manual review. With requirements smells analyses used, the quality of a requirements specification can be increased. However, we were not able to get significant results concerning the impact of automated requirements smell analyses on the efficiency of manual reviews.
